Abstract

Minangkabau local wisdom has developed a nagari in rural areas and the rantau regions in order to manage the conservation of urban heritage in the existing built environment. The objective of this study is to identify the main elements of urban heritage and their functions based on Minangkabau local wisdom. Finally, this study will develop a framework for urban heritage conservation approaches for cities in Minangkabau. The focus of this research is on elements forming the nagari that became important in understanding the character and identity of the case study area, i.e. the City of Bukittinggi and Padang. The investigation were made through two complementary observations. Firstly, being for diachronic observations (historical research), which focuses on the physical dimensions and the use of urban areas found in each stage of its development. Secondly, synchronic observation (tissue analysis), which refers to the shape formed by regional or area and how the area will cover various activities in the city. Analysis was performed by interpreting the data obtained from field observations, interviews and review of secondary documents. The results showed that the cities in Minangkabau evolved from various nagari. These developments can be identified by the main elements forming the nagari such as nagari borders, settlements and rumah gadang, jamek mosque and balai adat. In the context of the conservation of nagari’s heritage, the existence of the key elements of nagari and the applications of the concept of leadership furnace tungku tigo sajarangan and tali tigo sapilin are two approaches as the basic framework in managing the conservation of urban heritage in Minangkabau. There are two levels of mutually support basic framework that are level of understanding of the character of the nagari and the level of the conservation of urban heritage of nagari. In the sphere of urban heritage conservation, this study can be used as a reference in preparing the basic framework in understanding the significance value of the city. These understanding can be identified through elements that have formed the cities based on the local wisdom of the cultural roots. Apart from that, this study can also be used as a reference in order to conserve the customs and culture of Minangkabau in near future.
