Abstract
Mass earth movements, particularly landslides, are a natural phenomenon and an integral process of the geological cycle. Be that as it may, the current relentless pursuit of infrastructure development towards meeting the demands of growing population without due diligence to the environment, especially in developing countries, is triggering the inevitable climatic change worldwide. The harsh reality is that natural hazards of yesteryears have become natural disasters today impacting the lives of the people by way of loss of life and limb and livelihood. The human and material losses and the resulting grief and misery are major obstacles to the much sought after sustainable development.
