Abstract

Irrational thinking led to a disturbance to the mental health of a person. It produce emotional imbalance and lead to maladaptive behaviours. Individual who are suffering from irrational thinking are putting pressure, depression and anxiety that may arise as the effects of the self-conflict, interaction with others or how he/she responded to life. This paper aims to discuss how a Muslim can improve mental health by addressing the irrational thinking based on the approach of REBT. The study found that Islamic values such as patience, contenting themselves, believe in predestination, easily forgive mistakes of others, self-acceptance and believe that beside each event has a wisdom and goodness, are values that should be used to replace irrational thinking. When the thought of irrational can be replaced with the values of Islam, then it is producing new rational thinking, ability to control emotions, behaviour and at the same time, it can improve the mental health of a Muslim.
