Abstract
Parents are the first point of contact of children. Past research had shown that parental involvement in a child’s education is a more powerful force than other family background indicators such as social class, family size and level of parental education. The aim of this study was to investigate the relationship parental involvelment and and the academic achievement of primary school students in Kluang, Johor. In this quantitative research, a sample of 80 respondents from both parents, divorced parents and single parents family were involved by using stratified random sampling method. The data were gathered through questionnaire and achievement test. The analysis of data showed that the respondents from the both parents family had the highest parental involvement level while the divorced parents had the lowest. Overall, this study had provided support on the relationship of parental involvement on the child’s academic achievement in different family structures. Future research is needed to investigate the issue of single parenting with different instruments and more varieties of respondents to enrich the information on this issue.
