Abstract
According to the World Population Prospects: 2017 Revision (2017), 9.68% of Malaysians are senior citizens and Malaysia is expected to achieve ageing nation status by 2030. The increasing composition of the senior citizens are not only concentrated in rural areas but also in urban areas due to the rapidity of urbanization. It affected their quality of life such as increasing cases of neglections and loneliness syndrome among them. Hence, special housing scheme for senior citizens that capable to encourage social engagement is highly needed especially in forming active and prosperous ageing community. Cohousing is a concept of community-focused housing that aims to address the issues of senior citizens and encourage active ageing among them. Cohousing has been implemented in many countries, but it is a new concept in Malaysia. This study was conducted to assess the potential of cohousing development as a housing scheme for urban seniors towards active ageing. A quantitative study was conducted on 361 seniors of Bandar Petaling Jaya to assess their acceptance towards elements of cohousing development as a housing scheme for urban seniors. The result shows that cohousing development as a special housing for urban seniors has the potential to be implemented in Malaysia due to the positive response from respondents. The results of this study can be used as a basic guide to the Government and housing developers in developing a comprehensive senior housing sector that promotes active ageing based on their needs through the introduction of cohousing development.
