Abstract

Clean groundwater quality is very important for the people of Kelantan. This is because the largest source of clean water for the people of Kelantan apart from the domestic water supply is from groundwater. Care and management of good groundwater use can ensure the quality of groundwater resources remain clean. This study was conducted to identify the trend of groundwater quality, make a comparison between the quality of groundwater with the standards set in the Malaysian Standard MS 2320: 2010 drinking water quality and water quality standards for agriculture. It is also to study the relationship between groundwater quality and environmental land use as well as to find out the influence of Northeast Monsoon and Southwest Monsoon on groundwater quality. This study is based on the data obtained from the Department of Minerals and Geosciences Kelantan where the data are in 2010, 2014, 2015, 2016 and 2018. Among the parameters of groundwater quality obtained are pH, Total Soluble Solid (TDS) , Nitrate (NO3), Chloride (Cl), Arsenic (Ar), Iron (Fe) and Manganese (Mn). These data are then analyzed statistically using SPSS software. The production of groundwater quality trends based on years can prove that there is a correlation between several parameters involved for example TDS and Chloride. Monsoon changes also affect water quality changes. This study found that there are three significant parameters for the monsoon, namely Arsenic, Manganese and Silica. Overall, the quality of groundwater in Kota Bharu District is good in some locations although there are some parameters that exceed the Malaysian Standard MS 2320: 2010 for Drinking Water Quality such as in Pengkalan Chepa and Tanjung Mas. However, the groundwater can still be treated to enable compliance with drinking water quality standards as set.
