Abstract

Unique cultural heritage is the symbol of a nation's wealth that exists due to the invaluable preservation efforts of man. Therefore, cultural heritage must be kept sustainable, so as to remain an asset in cultural heritage tourism. Indonesia is a country with superior cultural heritage that can be marketed as unique tourism products. For example, Bali is famed for integrating its culture with the Hindu religion, North Sumatera with its Batak traditional houses, South Sulawesi with its Teroja or Tongkonan ancestral homes, Yogjakarta with its Keraton culture, Candi Borobudur, etc. However, the Minangkabau cultural heritage that is no less unique has started to slowly deteriorate due to neglect from the Government. Hence, the objective of this research is to assess the uniqueness and importance of Minangkabau cultural heritage in Tanah Datar to ensure its preservation. In this research, the Market Appeal-Robusticity Matrix was used to assess the cultural heritage assets in Tanah Datar. The research methodology includes questionnaires and interviews to obtain information from the tourism sector, tourist agencies, the Government, asset owners, and conservation experts. The results of this study show that Batu AngkeAngkek and Istano Basa Pagaruyung, Balairung Sari Tabek, Mesjid Rao-Rao, Rumah Tuo Kampai Nan Panjang, and Batu Basurek attained the highest score. However, the Government still continues to overlook these potential tourism products. Therefore, one of the implications of this research is the suggestion of certain steps to boost the image of these tourism products including the formation of policies and management for the Government, the asset owners, and the Tanah Datar community with the aim of maintaining these cultural heritage assets, so they can continue to and are capable of being an economic source, as well as to position Indonesia as a location with unique tourism products of its own.
