Abstract

Ruqyah is an Islamic therapeutic supplication modality using verses from the Quran or Hadith of the Prophet Muhammad for the purpose of healing. This research has been conducted to examine how ruqyah syar'iyyah affected the six samples of patients who suffer from depression. The first objective of this study is to analyze the approaches and methods of ruqyah syar'iyyah spiritual treatment that are used to treat patients of depression. The second objective is to analyse the comparison between ruqyah syar'iyyah spiritual treatments with conventional treatment for the patients. Next, to analyze the implications of ruqyah syar'iyyah spiritual treatment as a therapeutic intervention for patients who suffer from depression after treatment was given. The final objective is to produce a distinct treatment module for the ruqyah syar'iyyah spiritual treatment that has high validity and reliability. The qualitative methodology is applied by using interview as the main method of data collection. The process of measuring the degree of patients’ depression is through the use of the Beck Depression Inventory (BDI). The research analysis process involves the use of inductive, deductive and comparative methods. Based on this study, it is revealed that the degree of depression for each six patients were not normal before treatment, which was at the BDI score of critical level. After the ruqyah syar'iyyah treatment, the respective BDI scores were at normal level. All of the BDI readings obtained after treatment were within the normal range. This study has also produced a ruqyah syar'iyyah spiritual treatment module specifically for depressive illness. The results have shown that the ruqyah syar'iyyah spiritual therapeutic treatment can be an effective healing modality for patients suffering from depression. The findings also show that healing treatment process using ruqyah syar'iyyah is a universal therapeutic process because it responds to the needs of specific healing for the patient who received it and has the potential to influence the policy on Malaysia Ministry of Health in particular.
