Abstract
This study aims to provide empirical data regarding the relationship between memorization of al-Quran (with and without understanding meaning of verses) and calmness and relaxation of mind among Muslim. This study utilized experimental design by using Electroencephalography (EEG) to measure brain activities during the process of memorization of the surah in the al-Quran. Two group of four Muslim students were divided into control and experimental group as the respondent of this study. Brain activity were measured for the control and experimental group to get baseline data before the process of memorization of the al-Quran. Both group then given time to memorize the surah al-Ikhlas, one of the verses in al-Quran. After the process of memorization, the control group were given unrelated text while the experiment group were given meaning and explanation of the Surah al-Ikhlas. Brain activities of both group were measured again during memorization (without looking at text). The result showed that there was a significant differences between control and experimental group before and after intervention. The findings also indicated that the experiment group has a significant increase of the Alpha wave compared to control group. The significant increase of Alpha wave indicated that memorization with understanding induce calm and relaxation of mind of the respondent. This study provides scientific evidence of the important of understanding the meaning of the verses in al-Quran to produce a healthy well-being among muslim. This study emphasized that the Islamic Institutions should provide a policy to exercise the important of understanding the meaning of the verses in al-Quran among Muslim not only focus on memorization and recitation of al-Quran.
