Abstract

The study investigates the durability of dense-graded asphalt incorporating electric arc furnace (EAF) steel slag and copper mine tailings as aggregate materials. The asphalt mixture conforms with the ACW 14 gradation specified by the Malaysian standard specification for road works. Four material mixtures of eight mix designs, four PG 76 mixtures, and four 80-100 mixtures were investigated. Mix 1 is made of 100% granite, Mix 2 consisted of 80% granite and 20% copper mine tailings, Mix 3 is 80% EAF steel slag and 20% copper mine tailings whereas Mix 4 is 40% granite, 40% EAF steel slag and 20% copper mine tailings. The effects of moisture damage, aging, binder type and the number of revolutions on the abrasion loss were evaluated. The findings revealed that the moisture damage sample yielded higher abrasion loss, aged samples are less prone to disintegration and both the binder type and number of revolutions significantly affected the value of abrasion loss.
