Abstract

Food shortage, as a result of increasing human population is the main concern of this decade. In order to overcome this issue, lots of research was done to provide new high yield crops. One of these crops, used by the majority of human populations around the world is rice. Generally rice plant improvement involves several traits and these are quantitative in nature. Genomic information at the molecular level is the most reliable tool for plant scientists. Therefore, present study aimed to detect the polymorphism in Malaysian rice cultivars using microsatellite markers. Twenty one Malaysian rice cultivars were studied for polymorphism by 27 microsatellite primers distributed throughout the rice genome. These microsatellite primers exhibited 37 types of bands in Malaysian cultivated rice. All Malaysian cultivated rice showed monomorphism for RM103, RM505 and RM453 on chromosome chromosomes 6, 7 and 12, respectively. Polymorphism and monomorphism were calculated based on microsatellite bands and sizes of respective bands to perceive the genomic similarity and genomic variability indexes. Results showed that genomic similarity index and genomic variability index in Malaysian cultivated rice are 58.79 % and 41.21%, respectively. It reflected that the Malaysian cultivated rice still has a notable genomic variability for future hybridization programs
