Abstract

This study aims to design and develop a website to support online cooperative learning. In the early stage of this research, the guidelines for design and development of website was obtained using quantitative and qualitative instruments which were administered on 141 students and 4 lecturers from one of science social based faculties in Universiti Teknologi Malaysia. This data then utilized to facilitate the guideline of cooperative learning in a constructive learning environment which was implemented by using the group investigation method. Next, the learning process was structured in line with the principles of online learning and the website was developed guided by the Model of Instructional Design called Recursive, Reflective, Design and Development. Then, the website was evaluated through 6 learning sessions conducted based on multiple quasi-experiments and participated by 15 students from the same population. Quantitative and qualitative instruments were used to identify the effects of using website on improving the written communication skills and level of team working. The analysis from the perspective of written communication indicated that overall, text chat and discussion through forum increase from 74.93% at the first session to 84.02% at the mid stage of learning. Whereas the aspect of team working through text chats, forum and assignments showed an increase from 78.88% at the first session to 87.64% at the mid stage of learning. The results of the study identified two interaction patterns of using website tools and two structures of performing learning activities contributed positively to enhancing the written communication skills and level of team working. In conclusion the study puts forth a guideline to help students improve their proficiency of the written communication skills and level of team working.
