Abstract

The purpose of this study is to develop and evaluate computer assisted instruction (CAI) software for the teaching of the mole concept. The software was constructed based on constructive approach by Saunders (1992) and the problem solving model by Rein (1986). The traditional software was developed based on expository model by Ausubel. The effectiveness of the software was evaluated using 187 science stream students in three different upper secondary schools in Terengganu. The students were divided into three groups: the framework model, expository model of CAI and the group learning without computer. After the learning sessions, the students were given the achievement test. Questionnaires were delivered to both groups of CAI learners. Nineteen students were interviewed to obtain data on their problem solving skills. The achievements of the students in solving problem were analyzed by the two way of ANOVA. The student's knowledges of problem solving were analyzed using number and percentage form. Meanwhile their problem solving skills were analyzed using checklist form. The one-way of ANOV A was used to analyze a set of questionnaires of the student's view on CAI. The findings of the study showed that CAI groups based on framework model and traditional model were better compared to the group not using computer. The finding also showed that CAI group based on framework model almost mastered the process of problem solving. In term of mastery of knowledge in problem solving, the framework model of CAI performed better than others. The study also showed that the views of students about CAI were positive. There were no significant difference between boys and girls between groups of learning. The finding showed that the framework model of CAI may help and support students to increase mastery in problem solving.
