Abstract
The construction industry is known as one of the most hazardous activities. Best Housekeeping Practices during construction can reducing the high rate of injuries and fatalities on construction sites and concerned to make the work site and its surrounding area a safer place for the public as well as the workers. The objectives of this study are to identify best practices of housekeeping at construction site, to access current state of housekeeping in selected site based on the best practices principles, to identify factors and effects of housekeeping at construction sites and to develop housekeeping checklist that could be practiced at construction sites. Scope of the study focused on small and medium enterprises into sector commercial or residential and civil engineering in area Johor, Malaysia. In the present study, an exhaustive survey was carried out in these 32 project site selected areas using a standard checklist and a detailed developed questionnaire. The checklist comprised of 15 elements related to the housekeeping attitude statements on a 1-5 Likert scale which was distributed to respondents in the construction sector. The data was analyzed using Relative Index method and frequency analysis with using Microsoft Excel. The result of the questionnaire survey showed the environmental management system, site operations, transportation management and public access, waste management and recycling and the protection of surface and groundwater resources is best housekeeping practices for the construction industry. The result of the checklist show the difference of level between element that effect housekeeping management commitment at all levels in line with the management structure and behaviour. The findings of the present study revealed invaluable indications to the construction managers especially in improving the construction workers attitude towards safety, health and environment and hence good housekeeping culture in the construction industries.
