Abstract
Following the Northridge earthquake in 1995, buckling-restrained braced frames (BRBFs) were used as effective substitutes for concentrically braced frames (CBFs). However, despite their excellent energy dissipation capacity, BRBFs have faced some design, fabrication, installation, and maintenance challenges. Therefore, efforts are ongoing to overcome the limitations of BRBFs and enhance their seismic performance. This paper summarises the challenges associated with the design, fabrication, implementation, and cost of BRBFs. Besides this, the advantages offered by several types of recently developed BRBs are discussed. A comparative study of different code requirements for the seismic design of BRBFs is presented.
