Abstract

This study was conducted to examine the connection between family relationships and delinquent behavior among primary school students at Masai, Johor. This study investigates whether parental relationships affect child delinquent behavior while they are in school. This study is quantitative using a questionnaire instrument adapted and modified from 12 items of the Parenting Behavior Importance Questionnaire-Revised (PBIQ-R) and Alabama Parenting Questionnaire (APQ) instruments. Researcher investigated 3 dimensions of family relationships, namely the relationship of support, concern and affection that can affect the delinquent problem of children in school. This study uses sampling technique to distribute questionnaires to 251 respondents among level 2 students from three primary schools, namely SK Bandar Seri Alam, SK Nusa Damai and SK Taman Scientex. Data obtained from respondents were analyzed using Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS) version 22.0. Descriptive analysis was used to analyze demographic data, the most dominant family relationships and the most common delinquent problems among students. Spearman correlation is used to determine the relationship between family relationships and student delinquency problems. The results show that the most dominant family relationship is the affective relationship. While delinquency problems that often occur among primary school students are impolite behavior problems and overall delinquency problems are at a low level. The results of this study also show that there is a significant negative relationship between the three family relationships with students' delinquent problems. Parents should engage themselves with good communication, quality of time, appreciation, treating one another with respect, and teamwork with their children to make their future bright.
