Abstract
Researchers today are questioning the relevance of online tools for teaching and learning that have mushroomed due to advancements in technology. The main concern is that there are too many online tools available, but their applicability to the interactive learning environment is questionable, especially in supporting active and collaborative learning to promote a higher order of thinking. For this study, we examined previously published research articles to evaluate the online tools used in education, particularly for students to interact. Active interaction can enhance students' critical thinking skills as they share ideas, discuss with friends and put their ideas across to justify their arguments in a positive and matured manner. The results indicate that social media, Moodle and the Edmodo learning management system are beneficial to this end. The advantages of the above-mentioned tools are also discussed in this article.
