Abstract

The purpose of this research is to identify the relationship between Big Five personality and leadership style among staff in ABC Company. ABC Company is one of the leading marine and heavy engineering organizations in Malaysia's oil and gas sector. 134 respondents were involved in this research. The questionnaires distributed in this research were adapted from a combination of two instruments. First, the Big Five Inventory (BFI) instrument that was built by John, Donahue and Kentle (1991) to test the Big Five personality dimensions. There are five main dimensions of Big Five personality which are openness to experience, conscientiousness, extrovertness, agreeableness and neuroticism. The second instrument is the Multi Factor Leadership Questionnaire (MLQ) to assess the dimensions found in the transaction leadership style and the transformation in which the original instrument was produced by Bernard Bass (1985). The relationship between Big Five's personality and leadership style was identified based on Pearson's correlation statistic using the Statistical Packages for Social Services (SPSS) version 20. The study found that there was a significant relationship between Big Five's personality and leadership style. The results of the analysis showed that there are three significant relationships of Big Five personality with leadership style. First, there is a significant relationship between neuroticism personality with transaction leadership style, second a significant relationship between openness to experience personality with transformational leadership style and the third, a significant relationship between extrovertness personality with leadership style of transformation. The findings also showed that ABC’s Company staff have high in openness to experience personality and transformational leadership style based on mean value. Additionally, the findings of this study can add literature to the Big Five personality and the leadership styles of transaction and transformation.
