Abstract

Good solid waste management system is the basis to a clean environment. To strengthen and maintain solid waste management system so that community can be well received, especially to the public, the parties involved should intensify any initiative to encourage them to manage their solid waste properly. Focus of good solid management system might more be needed in rural areas due to the exemption of assessment payment. Therefore, the community in rural areas must make sure their solid waste should be managed properly because there is no system being adapted like in urban area. Through this study, two major objectives have been set, which is firstly, to identify the level of utilization of bins infrastructure that have been provided in rural areas and secondly, to study the perception of the residents towards collection of solid waste in rural areas. Both aspects in this study will look at the extent to which solid waste management in rural areas being managed. One rural area has been selected as the study area, namely Felda Ulu Tebrau, Johor Bahru. To identify the perception of the residents on solid waste management in their area, questionnaires are distributed and analyzed by using quantitative methods. From the results of the analysis, the improvements in the provided bins infrastructure must be done to encourage people dispose their waste properly. In addition, the collection system of solid waste should also be improved to avoid any problems that can harm the environment. Therefore, the parties involved should play their role to ensure that solid waste management in rural areas can be managed as well in urban areas.
