Abstract

Ta'wil is a valid method and Muslim scholars have agreed with its application in studying the Qur'an, Sunnah and Usul al-Fiqh. In Islamic tradition, it is more widely used in the discussions of ilahiyyat (theology) and of al-Sifat (the attributes of Allah). This method is not new since it has been employed during the time of the al-Salaf al-Salih. Yet, not all are in favour of it considering some groups have denounced its usage, such as what has been done by a literalist group. In a contemporary discourse, ta'wil seems to be substituted by an alternative approach that is hermeneutic. The characteristics of this approach are evident in liberalist discourse such as the issue of hudud, gender equality, homosexuality and Qur’an as a cultural product. Therefore, this study focused on two groups that is a group which opposes ta'wil and a group which manipulates it. For the former group, the study focused only on three figures who oppose ta'wil in relation to the attributes of God such as Ibn Hazm, Ibn Taymiyah and al-Shanqiti. For the latter, the study discussed five contemporary figures whose methods are manipulative towards ta'wil such as Fazlur Rahman within his understanding of the word qat‘ al-yad (cutting off of a hand); Scott Kugle within his understanding of the word al-fahishah (indecency); Amina Wadud by her discussion on the nature of woman and the issue of men leadership (qawwamun); Abu Zayd within the discourse of al-Quran as a humanity text and a cultural product; Muhammad ‘Abduh within his understanding of al-Fil verses. This study is a library-based research analyzing and giving responses to the ideas of both groups. This study is divided into five chapters. First chapter explains the outline of the study and its scope. Second chapter expounds the theoretical framework such as the distinction between ta'wil and tafsir, the law and its characteristics and also the criteria of muhkamat and mutashabihat verses. Third chapter discusses the history of ta'wil application and debates between opposing groups and proponent groups. Fourth chapter explains problems, usage, and method of hermeneutic, including the abuse towards ta’wil approach by the contemporary scholars. The study is then concluded in chapter five. The finding of this study is that first, ta’wil is a valid method and not prohibited as long as the meaning resulted is not in contradiction with the literary context, the transmissions and understandings of Ahl al-Sunnah wa al-Jama'ah scholars. The second is that the interpretations by modern scholars contradict the accepted notions and the literary context that yield the clear ones becomes relative, which lead eventually to deny the accepted understandings of authoritative ‘ulama.
