Abstract

Sarimah and Norzalia (2011) found that the mastery level of teacher candidates graduated from Diploma Pendidikan Lepasan Ijazah (DPLI) program in Technical and Vocational Education (TVE) is only at moderate level for education specialization component, technical and vocational education and confidence to teach in schools. Therefore this study was undertaken to evaluate the structure DPLI PTV program by Public Institution of Higher Education (IPTA). This study was designed to apply a mixture of quantitative and qualitative research. Qualitative data from the documents was analyzed by using content analysis and data from interviews with DPLI in PTV program coordinator at four universities that offer PTV programs which are; UTM, UPM, UPSI and UTHM to identify their perceptions progrm structure was analyzed using coding system. The findings of this study shows that DPLI PTV program should be extended to three semesters, and more technical education courses should also be introduced to enable teacher candidates to master the lesson content in technical education subjects as preparation for teaching in schools. Quantitative data obtained from DPLI PTV program’s graduate to assess level of implementation of the program DPLI PTV for variables such as teaching and learning, lectures, values and curriculum planning was analyzed by using computer Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS) software version 17.0. The findings of this study indicate the level of performance DPLI PTV program was high with an overall mean of 3.12. Variables that shows high level of mean are; teaching and learning (mean = 3:09), lecturer (mean = 3:18), values (mean = 3.27) while variable that only shows moderate level of mean is curriculum planning (mean = 2.95). This study suggests a new curriculum structure for DPLI in PTV especially in Life Skills (KH) specialization with emphasis on technical education courses that are more comprehensive.
