Abstract

The aim of this thesis is to design an FPGA implementation for faults detection in power transmission lines. A prototype of DE2 board training kit with Cyclone IIEP2C35F672C6 FPGA processor is used to perform the analysis and obtain experiment results. Failure to protect the electrical power system from power faults will result in serious damage to both equipment and end user, The electrical engineer has to quickly detect and locate any fault occurring on the transmission line to prevent such incident. This thesis makes use of the FPGA to produce a much more accurate and reliable result compared to other methods. It also uses discrete wavelet transform technique to extract features. The classification is then done using fuzzy logic. A three-phase line is simulated using Matlab-Simulink software to recognize both pattern and location of transmission line faults. We are able to identify different types of fault and location using symmetrical component relaying approach method which is based on Fuzzy logic. This algorithm, which applies the FPGA concept is then programmed using VHDL and the results are simulated using Altera Quartus II tool.
