Abstract
The stress states along the bondline in flat and cylindrical lap joints are analysed with the finite element method. The cross section of both specimen configurations is the same and is modelled with the same two-dimensional finite element mesh. The simulations are performed for the plane strain and axisymmetric cases which correspond to the flat and cylindrical specimens, respectively. The elastic properties of the adhesive are varied in a wide range and the influence on the stress distribution is analysed and compared for the two configurations. The most uniform stress state is obtained for the cylindrical specimen with the smallest diameter and the derived diagrams can be used for error prediction if average stress values are used for the estimation of elastic properties or failure loads.
