Abstract

Using Zinc Oxide (ZnO) nanoparticles embedded in chitin as a saturable absorber (SA), we demonstrate a passive Q-switched erbium-doped fibre laser (EDFL). Following SA fabrication, the SA is integrated in the ring cavity of an EDFL. At an operating wavelength of 1558.8 nm, a stable Q-switching operation was demonstrated with a threshold input pump power of 23.86 mW. The generated pulse had a frequency range of 33.44 kHz to 75.76 kHz and a pulse width of displaystyle 2.925µs.
