Abstract

Magnetic Polymer Composites (MPC) materials are a kind of smart materials whose magnetostriction behavior and mechanical properties can be altered in a controlled fashion by an external magnetic field. The material is composed of a soft polymer matrix with magnetic particles. Recently, MPC materials known as Magnetorheological (MR) solid-like materials such as MR elastomer (MRE) and MR foam have been widely explored for their potential for soft sensor and actuator application. Due to the flexibility of the material and magneto-induced phenomena that sensitive to low magnetic field strength, it is necessary to have model for understanding their mechanical characteristics and magnetostriction behavior, which will contribute in the development of MR devices. Therefore, this review paper will present various magnetostriction model that has been applied, the challenges of each model, an important parameter for device application and opportunities of machine learning model towards MPC are also highlighted.
