Abstract

Sanitary Landfill was introduced because of its advantages in managing solid waste in high volumes and its long lifespan with minimum pollution issues. Its ability to treat leachate and treat methane gas for biogas makes sanitary landfills the prime choice for waste disposal in Malaysia today. However, waste production which continues to increase up to 100.75% in 2018 compared to 2005 has reduced the capacity of sanitary landfills and thus shortened its lifespan. This situation worsens in Selangor with high population density especially in the Klang Valley. Jeram Sanitary Landfill and Tanjung Dua Belas Sanitary Landfill Site were selected as study areas because these two landfills are under the control of the Selangor State Government and receive solid waste from 8 local authorities in the Klang Valley. This study aims to identify the factors that reduce the capacity of sanitary landfills in Selangor and improvement measures that can be taken as an alternative in ensuring the sustainability of sanitary landfills in operation. Primary data collection was obtained through a semi-structured interview method for 10 respondents consisting of officers from the Selangor State Economic Planning Unit, Worldwide Holding Berhad and eight local authorities who sent solid waste to Jeram and Tanjung 12 Sanitary Landfills. In short, the improvements that can be taken to overcome the factors that threaten the capacity of sanitary landfills are through the introduction of waste to energy technologies such as incinerators, empowering 3R practices, waste segregation at the source and biological or compost treatment methods. It is hoped that these findings will provide useful input to stakeholders towards sustainable solid waste management in the State of Selangor.
