Abstract

The issue of providing pedestrian walkway is a major issue in big cities. Pedestrian walkway is vital because it is an element that will enhanced the safety of pedestrians on the road. The absence of designated walkway for pedestrian to move around and adding to the problem, narrow walkway under buildings forced pedestrians to use the main road which will inflict conflict between pedestrians and vehicles. The conflict will lead to accidents to pedestians. This study is conducted in the town of Kuantan. The first objective for this research is to indentify the desire and needs of pedestraians which will encourage them to use the pedestrian walkways. Whilst the second objective is to identify users perception towards existing pedestrian walkway provided in the Central Business District by the required authority. The data is analysed using Relative Importance Index (RII) Method which draws out the desired citeria chosen by pedestrians as an encouragement for them to use the walkways. The users choose the walkways that are pleasant and safe such as facilitating barriers between pedestrains and vehicles, proposing more crossings and furnish shadings to protect them from the weather. Apart from maintenance, the said authorities should ensure that pedestrian walkways that contribute to good connectivity and inter connectivity existed in the Central Business District of Kuantan. The findings of this study will indirectly accommodate Kuantan City Council to formulate the necessary criterias in providing pedestrian walkways in Central Business District of Kuantan
