Abstract

World Heritage World Heritage Sites are part of a form of cultural heritage that is very valuable and valuable for a civilization of human society and the country in general. Its role is seen as a strength of commitment that unites the community to maintain and preserve the heritage that is the proof of the development of a civilization or country. Although the study of world heritage sites internationally has started since 1945, but studies on the improvement of world heritage site management in Malaysia are still lacking. Therefore, an ongoing conservation and preservation effort must be implemented based on conservation principles or guidelines. However, the development policy in Malaysia which is implemented to pursue the status of a developed country by 2020 often ignores the factors of heritage management. Focusing on the UNESCO Lenggong Valley World Heritage Site as a focus area, this study elaborates on the issue of improving the management of the existing UNESCO Lenggong Valley World Heritage Site. The objective of this study is to identify the importance of conservation of UNESCO World Heritage Sites, to study the challenges faced in the management of UNESCO Lenggong Valley UNESCO World Heritage Site and further to examine the improvement of the management of UNESCO Lenggong Valley UNESCO World Heritage Site. Primary data collection was obtained through an interview method with 12 respondents from officials from the State Economic Planning Unit, National Heritage Department, Ministry of Tourism, Arts and Culture, Lenggong District Council, Lenggong District and Land Office and tourist guides in the area. The data analyzed descriptively are presented in the form of tables, diagrams and descriptions. In summary, the results show that there are five (5) challenges in managing this UNESCO Lenggong Valley World Heritage Site, namely vandalism, no specialized agency to manage this heritage site, land management and development issues, lack of local community involvement and lastly, high maintenance costs. Based on these findings, several suggestions for improvement are submitted, namely creating a Heritage Unit in the Lenggong District Council, involving the local community, providing adequate allocation, obtaining private involvement and emphasizing the educational aspect in management. It is hoped that this study can provide useful input to all parties in creating the best management to the UNESCO Lenggong Valley UNESCO World Heritage Site.
