Abstract

This chapter is concerned with the performance of unidirectional oil palm empty fruit bunch (OPEFB) fiber reinforced epoxy composites. The tensile and flexural properties of the 0-, 45-, and 90-degree oriented OPEFB fiber/epoxy composites as well as their effect on the performance of car bumper beams subjected to low-velocity impact of 4 km/h are presented. Fiber mass ratio was kept constant at 25%. The tensile and flexural strength of the composites was observed to be the highest when the fibers were loaded in a 0-degree orientation. The collision analysis of the OPEFB fiber/epoxy composite bumper beam was subsequently conducted with a finite element using LS-DYNA software in accordance with the Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards (FMVSS) 581 regulation. It was observed that the performance of the composites bumper beam was better when the fiber was oriented at the 0-degree angle.
