Abstract

The study on Retrieval Based Learning (RBL) has been conducted towards 72 vocational students who enrolled in the Software Language Course I to identify the effects of RBL in terms of cloud computing towards students’ achievement and memory retention. This quantitative research (quasi-experiment) comprised of an experimental group that underwent RBL activity in a cloud computing environment, while the control group underwent normal learning environment. JavaRBL instrument for pre- and post-tests were used on both groups. The results showed that; a) Students had no prior knowledge on the topic of Array and Class and Object before the start of the lessons, but their achievement on the topic of String Manipulation had mean value of 6.81 for the control group and 5.39 for the treatment group; b) There was a significant difference of mean score on students’ achievement between those who received RBL using cloud computing and those with conventional lessons on the topic of Array, String Manipulation and Class and Object; c) There was a significant difference of mean score on students’ pre- and post-tests on the topic of Array, String Manipulation and Class and Object; d) There was a significant difference of mean score on students’ memory retention between those who received RBL using cloud computing and students who received conventional lessons on the topic of Array, String Manipulation and Class and Object; e) Results on lessons using RBL have improved students’ achievement and memory retention as the effect size d Cohen was higher than usual. In conclusion, the implementation of RBL using cloud computing helps improve students’ achievement and memory retention.
