Abstract

Through studies of various lightning interested individuals and groups, they found that lightning prefers to strike at specific points of building structures. Usually these points are on the edges and comers of building structure top portion. Prior to lightning stroke, competition of the upwards streamers is won by specific points of the structures where occur the phenomena known as intensification of electric field prior to the incidents of lightning return stroke process. Ironically these points are at the vicinity of lightning air terminal and where structural damages take place. The lightning air terminal is not effective to capture the downward leader even though it is there to function as lightning arrester. Even it works but the impact of adverse environmental condition such as acid rain, cause the air terminals to degrade due to corrosion chemistry effects damage. When lightning strikes the air terminal, it may be broken and damaged. Because of this problem, building structures will be damaged due to frequent lightning leader attachment to it (prefer point of lightning strike). This paper describes a laboratory test which leads to a method to ensure lightning leader attachment to be equally distributed amongst the lightning air terminals. By this method can avoid the possibility of structural and air terminals damages due frequent lightning strokes ( with high current) based on fair-sharing-lightningattachment method using laser-aided ionization of air technique.
