Abstract

Integration of Additive Manufacturing and Vacuum Casting has been proven to be a successful method in producing parts for small series production. However, there are still possibilities for defects to occur during vacuum casting process. The aim of this study is to analyze the type of defects in vacuum casting process together with the remedies and causes. Fused Deposition Modeling technique was used to produce the pattern. The results showed three types of defects were identified by visual inspection; bubbles, flashing and mold degradation. Besides that, shrinkage compensation was done by preheating mold method. Shrinkage allowances on the pattern are not necessary as shrinkage compensation can be done by preheating method. In conclusion, the remedy by having the proper vent location was performed to reduce the overall part defects.
