Abstract

The Internet of Things (IoT) brings together devices, sensors, data and the cloud. Unlike a computer or tablet, IoT systems can access specific hardware like lights, sensors and motors. This nurtures the production of various IoT platforms such as Arduino, Raspberry Pi and Microbit to help developers to build both fun and professional projects. This paper reviews these three platforms by starting with brief introduction on each platform. The specifications and capabilities of each platform is discussed and compared. To further understand how these specifications guide the IoT applications development, few examples of IoT systems that are implemented on each platform are demonstrated. From these examples, the advantages and disadvantages of each platform are evaluated and the types of IoT systems to be utilized are determined.
