Abstract
Conflicts that happen in senior high schools in Makassar are so high that they need good management from school principals. School principals should have good knowledge and strategy of conflict management to address them. Knowledge of conflict management in the study involves principals’ views of conflict, kinds of conflict, conflict levels, and conflict solution. Strategies of conflict management in the study includes avoidance, informal discussions, negotiation, shipping, arbitration, and interventions by authorities and political institutions. The study investigated the levels of knowledge and strategy of conflict management of school principals, and the effect of knowledge on the principals’ strategy of conflict management. The study used quantitative data from 478 teachers and 47 principals who answered the questionnaires. Qualitative data was obtained from 14 school principals who participated in interviews. Quantitative data was analyzed for independent t-test, One-Way ANOVA, and Spearman regression using SPSS 18.0 version. Qualitative data were analyzed using codes and themes. The study found there were differences of knowledge, and levels of strategy for conflict management based on respondents’ demography. Based on data analysis, principals’ knowledge level and level of strategy for conflict management were moderate. There were differences in principals’ knowledge of conflict management based on ethnicity, but there were no significant differences based on gender and teaching experience. The study found that there were no differences in the principals’ strategies of conflict management based on ethnicity, but there were differences based on gender and teaching experience. The results showed that there were influences of principals’ knowledge and ethnicity toward their strategies of conflict management in senior high schools Makassar Indonesia. The research has shown that it is necessary for principals to develop knowledge and strategy of conflict management in schools to ensure teaching and learning process is conducted well and effectively. Based on the findings, the study has proposed a model for strategy of conflict management that are applicable in senior high schools of Makassar, Indonesia.
