Abstract

Botanical garden is a research centre on scientific studies of trees. It has various facilities that need to be managed to safeguard and improve the quality of existing public facilities. Unfortunately, the Johor Botanic Garden is a botanical garden that does not adhere to standard, lack facilities, improperly managed, poorly promoted and receives lacklustre support from relevant agencies. Facility management is a key factor to ensure that the garden can be used and utilized by users. This study was carried out to achieve two objectives, firstly to identify key components of facility management at botanical garden and their implementation and secondly to review the implementation of facilities management components for improvement purpose of the Johor Botanical Garden. Research methodology used consisted of three stages, namely theoretical research, case study and interview. The purpose of the theoretical research was to identify the components of facility management at botanical gardens. There are nine components for improving the quality of facilities management landscape which are policy management and organizational structure, human resource management, financial management, maintenance management, management of research and education, preservation and conservation management, management of information systems, management of examination and evaluation and finally management of program, events and promotions. The case study was undertaken to understand the botanical garden as well as and its management. The interview was conducted to obtain information on the management of facilities at the management and supervision levels. Findings show that application of facilities management components in the management of the Johor Botanical Garden does not comply with the standard practice. Therefore, it is suggested that the standard that facility management components needs to be adhered to in order to overcome the weaknesses in managing botanical garden.
