Abstract

Analogue based aerial photography for topography mapping using film medium has been applied from 1960 until 2007 by the Department of Survey and Mapping Malaysia (DSMM). There are more than 2000 aerial film boxes aged more than 50 years old are kept at the National Map Library (NML), DSMM. This legacy aerial photography film is a national treasure that contains information about Malaysia topography phenomena and needs to be preserved and conserved and can be used in spatial temporal analysis for landslide and topographic changes. The objectives of this study is to produce a georeferenced mosaic legacy aerial photo based on the GDM2000 RSO reference system and validating the georeferenced mosaic accuracy using feature matching method. The base map used for the geographical reference method in feature matching is to use Malaysia series map index L7030, scale 1:25000. The processing methodology involves various steps that covered georeferencing, seamline editing, mosaicking process of legacy aerial images, geospatial data generation for photo center of aerial photos and flight lines. The results showed that, the positional accuracy of legacy georeferenced aerial photo mosaic using feature matching method is ranging from 15 to 20 meters. In conclusion, the legacy georeferenced aerial photo mosaic provides the topography and terrain changes that benefit spatial temporal analysis for urban and rural planning, land development, disaster management, land use detection, archaeology and demographic studies.
