Developing hierarchical of mental health based on homesickness: Item response theory

Abstract

Nowadays, one of the numerous exciting experiences encountered by many young people is related to the transition linked to studying abroad. Many international students face various psychological and mental health problems. The objectives of this study to develop hierarchical guidelines on mental health based on homesickness aspect. The survey research was used as research design for this study. Through purposive sampling, 442 international postgraduate students were selected from five public research universities in Malaysia. They were asked to complete a set of a validated questionnaire (International Students' Psychological Wellbeing Scale). Findings showed that some items were placed at low, moderate and severe level. The hierarchical guideline of mental health based on the homesickness construct showed that most factors of "attachment to home" are placed in mild level while factors related to "dislike the university" are placed in severe level. Factors with high logit value showed more contribution to mental disturbance. Hence, factors related to "dislike the university" contribute most to poorer mental health in comparison to factors relating to "attachment to home." Results of this study would be able to help counsellors raise awareness among international students who are studying in foreign countries. In addition, focusing on the guidelines can help administrator in universities, lecturers, or students in developing good mental health.
