Abstract

As the time passes, the design of houses in Malaysia has evolved. Traditional Malay houses that were shaded by trees have turned into modern terraced houses that are compact and exposed to sun heat. Unlike traditional Malay houses, the internal temperature of modern terraced houses is much higher than outside. To reduce the amount of heat transferred from the sun through the roof, the most efficient and costeffective way is by installing roof thermal insulation. This thesis investigated the terraced houses’ resident’s level of knowledge on roof thermal insulation and their willingness to install roof thermal insulation in their houses. By using quantitative method, a questionnaire survey was conducted to 356 Johor Bahru’s residents living in low, medium, and high cost terraced houses that were built in the 1980s, 1990s, and 2000s. The result showed that the respondent’s level of knowledge on types of roof thermal insulation was below the median value of 3. However, the response to the importance of roof thermal insulation was at a good level at which the mode value is 4 out of 5 choices of likert scale. The result also showed that the median value of respondents’ willingness to spend for the installation of roof thermal insulation is RM1000. Although the respondents’ knowledge on types of roof thermal insulation was low, the level of awareness on the importance of roof thermal insulation was high. There are willingness among respondents to invest in order to achieve cooler indoor temperature and lower monthly electricity bill. By promoting the use of thermal insulation on a large scale, the use of thermal insulation among terraced houses residents can be improved.
