Abstract
Personality is an important dimension that should be owned by a school principal because this character is expected to bring better improvement to school performance. A school principal does not only has an obligation in managing matters of teachers and staff, but he/she also plays a role to improve school achievement. Based on this concept, the scope of task as a school principal becomes broader; therefore he/she should also be more responsible in manage. Distributed leadership is an effective way to facilitate the sharing of responsible. This study aims to identify the influence of personality and distributed leadership practice on school performances in Junior High Schools (SMP)in South Sulawesi province. This research utilize a combination of quantitative and qualitative methods with concurrent approach. The instrument for the quantitative method was questionnaire while the qualitative made use of interviews. A total of 477 junior high school teachers in South Sulawesi were selected to provide feedback through questionnaire. Qualitative data were obtained through interviews of eight outstanding teacher. Analysis of quantitative data was performed using SPSS.18 and qualitative data were analyzed manually using thematic. The research findings show that personality which is pertaining to agility is the most appropriate aspect required in appointing a school principal (mean values = 4.25). Meanwhile, distributedleadership aspectsof the schoolcultureandleadership practicesalsocontributeto the improvement ofschool performance (mean values = 4.27). Besides, agreeableness and openness personality could also contribute to the improvement of the school performance from the aspect of process (mean values = 4.39). While leadership distribution of the school culture, responsibility and leadership practices could contribute to the improvements of the school performance. It is found that the qualitative results were in agreement with the quantitative results in various aspects of personality and distributed leadership of a school principal, example consideration, sincerity, expansion of professionalism, sharing and involvement of teachers in leading the schools, in effectimproved school performances. This study has suggested a model of personality and distributed leadership for school principals to improve the school performance in SMP South Sulawesi Indonesia.
