Abstract

Increasing use of non-linear loads in recent years has increased significantly the presence of harmonics in the power system. The presence of harmonics in the power distribution will cause excessive winding loss in power system components and abnormal temperature rise, which will shorten the life span of the transformer and lead to the increase in operational costs. The harmonic presence in the power distribution system can be identified by harmonic measurements. This situation must be taken into account before the failure of the transformer. If the transformer fails to operate with the expected lifetime, it will cause a huge loss. This thesis presents a preliminary method of transformer maintenance, due to the effect of non-linear load on the transformer temperature rise, using a designed of multi-channel\ data logger. In this study, a method has been proposed to monitor and identify the transformer condition. This method has been done by recording the power quality data of a transformer. Data is taken at all channels of distribution and transformer temperature simultaneously. Measurement is performed for operating transformer by using the multi-channel data logger. This method is more efficient than a normal data logger, which has only one channel. The data logger is designed using quality power transducers CT1700. Microcomputer modules VSX-6154 is used as the processor. The program is developed using Borland C ++ and Visual Basic 6.0 with RS232 serial communication. The equipment cost is at lower price than other commercial data logger. The accuracy was confirmed by the National Metrology Laboratory SIRIM. The advantages of this tool are to simultaneously capture data harmonics up to number 21 and temperature simultaneously for 10 channels. The data obtained helps an early response before the transformer fails completely, and this may save high operational costs.
