Arcing fault detection has always been a difficult issue. This fault tends to be high fault impedance, the fault current is below maximum load limit and its detection is not possible through overcurrent relays. To study the characterization of arcing fault, an underground distribution system has been modelled and simulated using PSCAD/EMTDC program. An arc model is used to examine the diverse and complex characteristics of arcing fault. This paper presents some results in time domain and frequency domain.
