Abstract

A new multistage symmetrical wobble-plate compressor has been developed with a working pressure from 3 to 250 bars for compressing natural gas for vehicles (NGV). This paper describes the procedures for obtaining the optimum number of stages for this compressor functioning as a Home Refueling Appliance (HRA), refilling the vehicle at a slow rate of 1 Nm3/hr. Several parameters such as the desired pressure, an appropriate torque and work, pressure ratio, and compact compressor size were taken into consideration. In this HRA design, the number of stages considered were from three to six. Finally, the number of stages for optimum design at a pressure ratio of 2.913 was found to be four-stage arrangement.
