The invention of propulsion assisted transportation could be traced back to the ships of the 1st century propelled by paddle wheels. Propelled transportation for the three modes of transport; marine, automotive and aeronautic, are marked by common eras. Within a common era technological development in transportation propulsion is quite unique. It is driven by factors such as real economic needs, availability of resources, knowledge and opportunity. A timeline plot of technological achievement coupled with era-byera principal driving factors could give a fair indication of future trend. This paper collects and analyse the data on propelled transportation technology from the 1st to the 21st century to detect (i) technological trends for the three transportation modes, (ii) their era-by-era principal driving factors, and (iii) indicate the future path. Early results indicate that technological development of the past propelled transportation for all modes of transport is high on real economic needs but low on knowledge. The 21st century technological development for the aeronautic is high on opportunity and has far surpassed those for marine and automotive.
