The type and configuration of the exit used at the top of a CFB can have a significant impact upon the suspension dynamics of Circulating Fluidised Beds (CFBs). This paper is meant to quantify these effects. The riser exits namely; right angle, blind T and right angle with internal baffles are commonly used in industrial CFB. The effects of these riser exits on CFB hydrodynamics was investigated using computational fluid dynamics (CFD) software. Simulation was done using FLUENT, a CFD package by Fluent Inc. Sand particles and air were used as the solid and ga5 phases, respectively. The simulations were done using the geometrical configuration of a CFB test rig at the Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM). The results discuss the variation of velocity contours, along the riser column, due to change in riser exit geometry. The effect is significant m the upper region of the riser column and the velocity contours are also influenced by the exit geometry. Simulations discusses the solid volume fraction distribution in the upstream region of riser exit.
