Abstract

Betatron is a type of particle accelerator that accelerates electrons. Since betatron is able to produce high energy electrons, it can also produce narrow beam of photon and the radiation produced by the betatron is X-ray. This investigation aims to calculate the radiation dose of the X-ray at certain points in a room when a betatron of 7.5 MeV was used. In this research, there were 6 points of interest located in the air within the room where the radiation dose was set to be detected by a moving air ball of radius 5 cm in the MCNPX simulation. The room dimension was declared in the coding of the MCNPX where basically, the shape of the room is a made up several rectangular parallelepiped concrete and air. The result from the simulation was compared with the real measurement of dose rate taken by survey metres. Both of the methods show the highest radiation dose at the coordinate of (450, 300, 50) cm which marks the nearest point with the betatron. Other than that, further analysis was done on coordinate (250, 300, 50) cm to determine the effective dose on that point. The result shows that the simulation has less than 0.1% relative error and the betatron X-ray is still in the range of general use for scanning procedure.
