Abstract

The genus lycopodium (family Lycopodiaceae) consists of about 500 species commonly known as club mosses. Several Lycopodium species are used medicinally such as L. serrata (or Huperzia serrata) which appears in Chinese Traditional Medicine for the treatment of contusions, strains, swellings and schizophrenia (Zhou et al., 2003). it has become known worldwide as a medicinal plant since chinese scientists discovered huperzine a (HupA) from it in the 1980s ( Liu et ai.,1986a, 1986b). Lycopodium alkaloids, triterpenes, flavones and phenolic acid are some of the phytochemical constituents found in Lycopodiaceae plants. in Malaysia, several endemic species of Lycopodiaceae have been reported. Little is known about the phytochemistry of these species. The objectives of this study is to isolate and elucidate the structures of phytochemical constituents of H. carinata and H. Nummularifolia. Compounds isolated from H. carinata are 3 -0-acetyl-3β, 14β,21 α-trihydroxyserratane and 14β,21β-dihydroxyserrat-3β-yl acetate. whereas, from H.nummolarifolia are 21-episerratenediol and 1 4 β, 21 β-dihydroxyserrat-3β-yl p-dihydrocaffeate E57.
