Since the 1970s, Malaysia has introduced a variety of measures to achieve sustainable development goals which have been embodied in relevant policies and development plans, such as the Five-year development plans, Outline Perspective Plans, and Vision 2020. The recent Ninth Malaysia Plan (2006-2010, National Physical Plan (2005) and National Urbanization Policy (2006) also indirectly provided a stronger strategic measures towards better environmental resource management policy. These strategies have set the preliminary steps for Malaysia towards sustainable development. However, a more comprehensive measures is required to achieve develop a low carbon society by a holistic planning in energy efficiency measures, enforcement of environmental and related regulations, land use planning and increasing public awareness on climate change and global warming.
