Abstract

The utilization of waste fibers from textile industries for reinforcement of concrete is a very attractive approach because of their technical, economical and ecological benefits. This article highlights some laboratory test results of the influence of waste carpet fibers on the deformation characteristics of concrete. Concrete mixtures containing 0.5% to 2.0% fibers were made and tested for compressive strength, flexural strength, modulus of elasticity and shrinkage. It has been observed that carpet fiber reinforced concrete had relatively lower compressive strength compared to plain concrete. Along with the lower strength development, the modulus of elasticity of carpet fiber reinforced concrete was found to be lower although a higher value in flexural strength was observed. In this study a relatively higher drying shrinkage was also recorded in concrete containing carpet fiber.
