Abstract

We demonstrate a Q-switched Erbium-doped fiber laser (EDFL) using a graphene synthesised by electrochemical exfoliation of graphite at room temperature in I% sodium dodecyl sulphate ( SDS) aqueous solution. Graphene flakes obtained are mixed with polyethylene oxide (PEO) as the host polymer to produce free standing composite thin film which act as passive Q-switcher in EDFL in ring cavity. The EDFL operates at around 1561 nm with the pulse train repetition rate ranged from 16 to 44 kHz, the average output from 0.07 to 0.20 mW, maximum pulse energy of 6.2 nl and the shortest pulse duration of 3.0 j.ls.
