Abstract

This paper describes the approach of developing a high-speed molecular stirring system by using liquid crystal as the molecular stirrer. The research involves the usage of a pulse generator as the external source to provide pulsated electric field to the liquid crystal. Liquid crystals are known to possess magnetic and electric properties. In this work, a ferroelectric liquid crystal, N-(4-methoxybenzylidene)-4-butylaniline, will be employed. In a previous study, the usage of magnetic field and liquid crystal as the structure aligning agent has led to the successful formation of well-aligned titanium dioxide via sol gel method. When no magnetic field was applied, the titanium dioxide obtained was spherical and not aligned. Due to the unique properties of liquid crystal towards electric field, the present high-speed molecular stirring system is proposed.
